Breast cancer

As we were walking thought metro town mall I saw these people handing out brochures about breast cancer so I took one and started reading it. It was really interesting here are some of the things it said like some of the early symptoms were : lump in breast or armpit , change in breast size or shape , skin becomes puckered and very itchy. And in the brocher said how it was treated, it is treated by  screening , surgery , radiation therapy or chemotherapy. These are the 3 most popular forms of treating breaks cancer. It all depends if it is high or low risk , if the woman has hit menopause  and if the cancer has spread. It affects 1 out of 8 women . It is the second cancer killing of woman after lung cancer.it affects your life depending on the extremeness of the cancer if its  low risk it wont harm you as much you will most likely just get treatment and then continue your daily life but in the other hand if it is extreme some  are deadly if not treated in time or treated properly.

Genetic screening discussion

After watching the movie Gattaca it got me thinking about genetic screening. So I messeaged 5 of my friends asking them for their opinion.

First I asked Cindy and this is what she said
: " I strongly agree with genetic screening because in my opinion you will get a chance to design your perfect child! I think that if you have the chance to do it , to create your perfect child why not do it. I think also you will save a child the pain of having a mutation or some type of diesease. So that they won't have to go through the pain and suffering of a child with some sort of disability. Imagine a world were you wouldn't have kids with cancer that got passed down to them through genetics. A world were there would not be any children with problem or disability it would make life so much better so the kids that these unfortunate disabilities won't have to suffer any longer. That is why I am completly supporting genetic screening i think it is the best thing that has happened in the parenting world so far."

So  Cindy was supporting genetic screening but  then I asked my friend Joe for his opinion and he said the complete opposite.

This is what he said
: " I think they idea of changing your child to be who you want them to be is ridiculously stupid ! I completly disagree with it ! I think it's wrong and selfish! I think that a child is a gift and a blessing so you should love it how ever you get it , even if that means a baby with a disability. Each child should be loved and treated with respect no matter what they look like or no matter if they are normal or have a few problems. I think this is completely selfish of the parents because they are not accepting the wat their child has come but rather they are changing all these things about there babies to make them the way they want to. Also think if you were to have a world were all there was , was perfect babies there would be too much pressure for people to handle so it might just lead to corruption and chaos. This is why I am completely against genetic screening! "

so now we have Cindy who is supporting genetic screening and joe who is completely against it. What will my friend Angie say ?

This is what she had to say about it :
" I somewhat disagree with genetic screening it is I think a procedure that is very unethical. I believe it is rather unethical because if you design you'd child it's not really it's self any more it's what you designed it to be. It's not a human being who chooses it's on fate. It's a child who already has it's fate planned out it knows how it's most likely going die and when. There's no chance , with designer babies. But I must recognize that it is rather helpful for minor details about the baby like are they going to be left or right handed ? Or things like their height , but over all I think it's a some what bad idea to screen your babies. "

So after Angie I asked my good friend Donald and this is what he said :
"I believe  genetic screening has it's pros and cons. I think I am at a position were I am 50-50 for it and against it. it has it's good and it has it's bad. I think it is a good idea for the following reason , I think if you could eliminate they chance of having some life-threatening disease why not spare the child some mercy and get rid of the mutations , disabilities or diseases. But I am against it when it comes to altering how your child looks. Your child should be unique not designed ! I think it's wrong to change anything about a beautiful little human being. That's why I am 50-50 for it and aganst it. "
And finally I asked my friend Alyssa and this is what she said :
I sort of agree with genetic screening but not completely. I think it's a good idea to be able to choose what your children look like. Because aren't they support to be a reflection of you ? So you should be able to shape them into what you and your spouse want. And I also agree that you should choose your child's personality for example the mothers sense of humour and the fathers charisma . But I disagree when you start to know things like your child's life span or most likely cause of death. So I mainly agree with genetic screening but not 100% . "

So that's what my friends had to say about that I think I agree with Alyssa the most though.

IVF AD

I was walking down Granville st and I saw this IVF and I thought it was so well done , honest  and professional it deserved to be posted .

Having trouble conceiving?
Tired of trying?
Low sperm count?
Blocked tubes?
Hormonal disturbances?
Well we can help! By using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) How IVF works? We extract egg(s) from the woman and take sperm from the man and fertilize them in a laboratory until an embryo(s) is created. After embryo(s) is created the egg is inserted inside back into uterus. Some of the risks of IVF are 17% chance of having a miscarriage, 30% chance of having twins ,  1-2 %  of having triplets (or more) IVF babies have a 9% chance of having a major birth defect compared to the 4% in natural babies. Some of the benefits of IVF are: over 3 million babies conceived this way making probability rates high. The probability rates are 54 % to 45% for woman 34 and younger 39%to 29% for woman
aged 35-39 and 20% to 14% for woman 40 and over.

Protein plant

After we left the mall we visited a protein plant on Nelson st. This is what happened step by step
1. The nucleus revived the signal to make the protein.
2. The DNA message for  that protein was copied into a small , signal-stranded copy of DNA called messenger RNA or mRNA for short.
3.mRNA left through the nucleus through the nuclear pores.
4. The mRNA were delivered to the ribosomes which "read" the message and turned it to protein.
5. Then the protein entered the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
6. A vesicle formed at the end of the ER and carried the protein to the Golgi body.
7. Then the Golgi body packaged the protein and got it ready for transportation.
8. A vecicle formed off the end of the Golgi body and carried that protein to the cell membrane.
9. A vesicle attached to the cell membrane and then then the protein was released out of the cell.
Here's an overall picture of what happened

My unique friend Jane

So today while we were having some frozen yougort at metro town this unique girl sits in the table next to us and after thinking about it I saw that she had Down syndrome and I started talking to her. I asked her what Down syndrome really was ? how it affects her ? what were some of the emotional challenges of living with Down syndrome ? And what it felt like to be her ? And this is what Jane said : well Down syndrome is basically when a person has an extra chromosome instead of having 46 I have 47. And  it causes intellectual disability that makes it hard for me to learn things. It affects me in many ways but I try to focus on the positive things but it affects me in ways like my physical appearance I am shorter than most kids in my school and I look a bit different than them I have upward slanted eyes and I speak a bit different than them. I also have to accept the fact that I won't be able to drive I don't like it but I have to accept it.but other than that I am like them in many ways. It just takes me a bit longer to learn things. I am a regular teenage girl . I do regular teenage girl things I like to read , listen to music, horseback ride and swim.  Sure at times it's hard but I always tell myself that having this extra chromosome is what makes me "me". So I try to focus on the possitive things!!  Well some of the emotional challenges of having Down syndrome are having to make people accept you , sometimes people don't like me because I'm a bit different and that really hurts at times that's why I try to express all my emotions by doing things like writing poetry and singing but it's really sad that people always stare and laugh at me just because I look a bit different than them. We'll like I said before I have my challenges but I am just like a regular person I just learn things at a different rate to be me is to be a hard working and thankful person. I have to overcome a lot to be were I am today but working hard is worth it.

As we were walking I saw this ad saying follow me on twitter @_babyinthewomb_ and I thought it was so funny ! Baby in the womb haha very funny everyone go follow him @_babyinthewomb_

Golgi's resume

I met my friend Golgi and he seemed to have forgot his resume while we were eating lunch !
Haha I will give it to him next time I see him.

My new friend !

Today as we were eating lunch in Stanley Park we met a new friend ! he's name was Golgi Apparatus or Golgi Body for short. As we were talking to him we found out so many new things about our friend Golgi ! Like for example he works inside a cell ! And we found out how he was first discovered ! These are some of the questions I asked him !
Q: what do you do for a living ?
A: well I work inside a cell , I do the sorting and the packaging of the proteins . It's really fun I get to get the proteins ready for transportation !
Q: were are you from ?
A: I was discovered in Italy but I'm here in Vancouver only on vacation.
Q: who discovered you ?
A: Camilo Golgi , that's why I'm called the "Golgi" Apparatus
Q: How old are you
A: I was born in 1897 so I'm 116 years old
It was so nice to meet Golgi Apparatus! Here's a picture of him

Gene town

Today as we were walking down Seymour St we walked into a debate where people where debating if you should be able to use Left over embryos for stem cell research on trying to find a cure for diabetes ? And it really got me thinking so here is my opinion on the subject.

I personally believe that there is nothing wrong with using left over embryos to try to find a cure for a disease that affects million of people world wide. If you are not using the embryos because the person in need of IVF or the type of artificial insemination they decide to use only one or whatever the case the left over embryos are just going to die anyways so why not use them to try to find a cure or an effective treatment to one of the worlds most popular disease. Although I could understand how some of the council   people were against it because they called it inhumane and said things like " don't use human beings as lab rats , for  your experiments " I cam understand that some people would not be okay with these. I am not one of those people though, but I came up with an idea that could benefit both sides. If you do happen to have left over embryos I think instead of taking them right away and putting them in the labs I think you should discuss it with the parents because some parents would not be okay with it and others would  be okay with giving them up for science. I think that is fair , so really you leave it up to the parents choice. And for the embryos that the parents are not willing to give up you could store them separately, away from the ones that you have the permission to experiment and do tests on. I also support this idea because you are using humans but they aren't like human beings that are adults or children  so you are eliminating the need to do experiments on a living human. You are eliminating the risks , the chance for error that could be deadly. You are able to do all your tests and experiments the way you want to because you would not have to worry about an actual human being with a family, job, a house and other reasons to live you. You aren't harming them. You are just experimenting with an unborn baby that has nothing. It doesn't have any reason to live unlike an adult that you would be using for the research. And finally you are giving the people who do have diabetes hope ! You are giving them the hope that by doing research on the unborn embryos  you might come up with a solution on how to treat diabetes. Therefore I completely support the use of unborn embryos for the use to try and cure or treat diabetes.

My Opinion on Desinger Babies

Today I saw the movie Gattaca and it got me thinking of designer babies and here is my opinion on the topic. In my opinion designer babies have both pros and cons but  I think that you should leave it to chance because if not everyone will have too much pressure to be perfect and be the way other people expect them to be. Which I think is not at all right I think people should be the way they want to be. One of the  pros of designer babies  would be for personal reasons like to be able to chose small details about their child like eye and hair color but things like cause of death and things like life expectancy should be left to chance in my opinion because other wise you will live your life in fear thinking about when your going to die.And for the cons everyone's life would have such high standers that some people might not be able to live up to those high expectations and end up making themselves stressed out and feeling like a failure.so I think they are 50-50 because they are good for somethings but bad for others. But if I were given the option to have a natural baby or a designer I would most likely choose natural.

Gattaca Movie Review

Today i went to the movie theater with my friends Sam and Johnny to watch the movie Gattaca and this is my opinion on it.  I really enjoyed the movie Gattaca. I thought a lot of things were very well done but I was also left with a few questions. For example I really liked how in the movie they showed how hard the main character had to work everyday just to be able  to do everyday things like go to work and be accepted in his society .He had to do things like everyday wake up scrub himself from head to toe, insert blood in a fake fingerprint, placing a sac filled with an other mans urine just to make sure he left behind no traits of himself, and commence the transformation from Vincent to Jerome Marr. but like I said I had a few questions , what I didn't understand was why near the end Jerome killed himself and why and also what happened with Vincent and Irene , did she know he was faking it , was she going to help him that part really confused me.but overall I really enjoyed the movie all thought it felt quite long in my opinion , it was a good movie with a deep message.
